Emily's Project July 5-9, 2010
High School Investigations for Girls
This program is for high school girls who are considering using their talent in science, math, or technology in an exciting career. Emily’s project is designed to give high school girls something they rarely get: contact with practicing women scientists and a chance to do laboratory work in a college setting. With only 14 girls, the intimate atmosphere gives them a chance to know each presenter as a person, as well as a professional. Evolutionary Biologist Emily McTavish, who has done extensive field research on amphibians and is now using mathematical models to organize her data to find answers, will be guiding the girls. She will be joined by other women research scientists who will help the girls understand how to design a research project for the week, collect the data, and then interpret the findings. Over the course of the week girls will experience the process of scientific research and make conclusions from the data collected. Girls can also plan extended projects to complete during the coming year for independent study at their schools or science fairs. The week also includes team building activities and an evening get-together.
