young women in science
STEM Explorers
August 2-6, 2010
For Girls entering 7th, 8th,
or 9th grade
This week at Bard College of Simon’s Rock gives middle school girls an introduction to STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) fields and a taste of college life. Fourteen girls learn from women in the STEM professions in a fun atmosphere without the pressure of grades or the distraction of boys.
During a typical day at the Fisher Science Center girls gather in the state of the art lecture hall for an introductory presentation from a scientist who explains her career and research. Next it is into the Biology Laboratory for experiments. Lunch hour includes an “all you can eat” buffet in the dining hall and time to relax outdoors. In the afternoon session girls meet a second specialist and explore another field.
STEM Explorers gives girls these opportunities:
• Meet eight different women from fields like Archeology, Anthropology, Astronomy, Biochemistry, Biology, Chemistry, Engineering, Forensics, Geology, Math, Marine Biology, Ophthalmology, Physics, and Veterinary Medicine.
• Hear about leading research laboratories and corporations like Smith, Yale, Brandeis, Williams, U. Mass, Mt. Holyoke, i-robot, New York State Forensic Laboratory.
• Visit Research Laboratories to work with women in their academic laboratories.
• Use advanced techniques and equipment not usually available to students until they enter college.
• Make new friends who share your interests.
Details of the 2010 roster of scientists and their topics will be announced in May on the Flying Cloud Institute website.
