GIRLS! Summer
August 2-6, 2010
For girls entering 5th or 6th grade

Girls entering fifth and sixth grades spend an exciting week together learning about science, engineering, and mathematics while exploring the environment. Environmental educator Stephanie Bergman has developed the curriculum and trained a team of high school girls who lead the younger girls in their daily investigations.

_The sixteen girls are divided into teams so that they meet new friends. Each day they look at a new topic and have opportunities to observe, conduct experiments, and draw conclusions. The sub-specialties are: ecosystem study, botany, soils science, wetlands, and renewable resources. They visit the garden, wetland, pond, and trail to collect samples and record what they see. In the laboratory they conduct further experiments and use microscopes for closer observations. Without boys in the mix, girls enthusiastically answer questions in the group discussions and take charge in the hands-on activities. The picnic lunch outside is a favorite time for the girls to enjoy relaxing with their teenaged mentors. Please apply early so you won’t miss this special week.
