Science Meets ART: S-M-ART!
Session Three:
Performing Arts
July 19th – July 30th 2010
AGES 5 to 14 years
In this session children express ideas and develop skills in acting, dance, and music but it is not the usual theater camp. Intermediate and beginners continue to explore the visual arts and science in this session. The final performances are a celebration of what they have accomplished.
Beginner – Finished pre K and K. Children are greeted as they arrive and go to their club house to prepare for the days activities.
Artist, puppeteer, performer, and environmental educator Meredyth Babcock is responsible for this group throughout the day. Their first responsibility is to feed the goats and chickens. The organic vegetable garden is the next stop to tend and harvest the food for snack. Children go on to explore the woods, fields, and ponds. Back from one of these outings children are assisted in drawing and painting, building with clay and wood, and dancing and singing by staff artists. The high school interns provide extra caring encouragement through their process of discovery and mastery of new skills. They make sets, props and costumes for a short performance piece presented on the last day.
Intermediate – Finished grades 1-5. Children have a daily theater workshop where they learn about character development, plot, and staging. Through improvisations they learn to project their voices, work as a company, and be in character.
Music includes singing and percussion. Creative movement classes complete the performing arts experience. Children will be encouraged to bring science concepts into their exploration of the performing arts. Art workshops are devoted to painting and sculpture during the first week but move to making costumes and props during the second week. Time is also allotted for ceramics, environmental science, and agricultural studies. Children put their hearts into their final performance.
Advanced – Finished grade 6, 7, and 8. Children participate in all aspects of developing an original theater piece that is inspired by a math or science idea of interest to them.
During the first week they devote three hours each day to developing their ideas, characters and script, improving their performance skills through dance improvisations and theater games. They learn technique, focus, and teamwork. Afternoons in the art barn are spent in a silk screening workshop where children create their designs, prepare their screens, and print their tee shirts. The day ends with the resident musician. The second week is taken up with rehearsals for performance and making the props, sets, and costumes. The final performance will be on Friday July 30.
The activities start at 9:00 AM and end at 3:30 PM.
A morning snack is provided. Children bring lunch.
