Session Two:
Artistic Expressions
July 5th – July 16th 2010
AGES 5 to 14 years
Beginner – Finished pre K and K. Leader Kristen Sparhawk greets the children as they arrive and shepherds them to their club house to prepare for the day's activities. This group has been given the responsibility of feeding the goats and chickens which they do with great pride. They also have the job of weeding the organic vegetable garden and harvesting peas or carrots for snack. Children explore the woods, fields, and ponds. On return Kristin, a movement and theater specialist, will help the children understand what they have seen and express their ideas. Each day will vary. There may be mask making, building, dance, inventing plays, developing stories, painting, instrument making as directed by the interests of the children.
In this two week session it is likely that they will want to create a performance piece to show others. Other faculty members will assist in drawing, painting, and building with clay. High school interns provide them with caring encouragement through their process of discovery and mastery of new skills.
Intermediate – Finished grades 1-6. The children will have a variety of workshops where science and math provide the inspiration for the visual arts including painting and drawing, ceramics sculpture and functional pottery. There will also apply these ideas in their music and dance workshops. Science and math are the tools to explore the environment, agriculture, and architecture. Children develop their projects using their own ideas and are able to work at their own skill level.
They save their best work for exhibit at the New Marlborough Meeting House at the end of the session.
Advanced – Finished grades 7 and 8. During these intense ten days, children produce an astounding body of art work for a public exhibition at the New Marlborough Meeting House Gallery. This year the inspiration for their projects will come from the sciences - from atoms to cells to forms they can see in nature. The mentors who guide the children include professionals in science illustration, neuro –science, architecture, painting, filmmaking, ceramics, sculpture and photography. Children may specialize in a particular area or take on a number of projects. They will be invited to explain their creative process to the public at an event at New Marlborough Meeting House on July 18.
