session one:
Science in the Arts
June 28th - July 2nd 2010
AGES 5 to 14 years
Beginner – Finished PreK and K. This short session introduces children to Flying Cloud. Leader Kristen Sparhawk greets the children as they arrive and shepherds them to their club house to prepare for the day's activities. This group has been given the responsibility of feeding the goats and chickens which they do with great pride. The organic vegetable garden is the next stop to tend and harvest the food for snack.
Children explore the woods, fields, and ponds with a specialist in environmental science who guides them using the idea of the scientific process to find the answers to their questions. Kristin, a movement and theater specialist, will help the children understand what they have seen and express their ideas. As time and curiosity allow the day may include mask making, building, dance, inventing plays, developing stories, painting, instrument making as directed by the curiosity of the children. Other faculty members will assist in drawing, painting, and building with clay. High school interns provide them with caring encouragement through their process of discovery and mastery of new skills.
Intermediate – Finished grades 1-5. Each day is different. Children engage in a wide variety of experiences in environmental science, African rhythms, horticulture, farm animal care, ceramics, architecture, dance, painting, and more. The leaders introduce concepts from the sciences and math that are associated with these topics so children begin to see the connections between their various investigations. Children have the opportunity to test their own ideas using the approach used in the scientific method and the engineering design process.
Advanced – Finished grade 6,7, and 8. Young teens explore the science and math that underlie visual arts, architecture, music, and agriculture. Projects include the chemistry of photography and ceramics, the math and engineering in architecture, and the color theory applied to painting. Presenters are specialists in chemistry, architecture, math, photography, ceramics, and painting. While making art children learn the scientific methods to achieve the effects they need to express their ideas. Their projects will be displayed at the Flying Cloud show “Where Science and Art Meet” at the New Marlborough Meeting House Gallery.
