SMArt in the Schools

Over the past twelve years Flying Cloud has partnered with local schools to introduce teachers to  interdisciplinary projects that help students understand math and science. Much of this work was pioneered at the Flying Cloud Summer Program and then adapted for classroom use by matching projects to the state curriculum standards.

Over a ten year period Flying Cloud Institute was able to build these ideas with teachers at the Southern Berkshire Regional School District through generous grants from the Massachusetts Cultural Councils Creative Schools Program. The focus of this project was to show teachers how using the arts and the environment to teach science and math engage students more deeply in their learning. Flying Cloud led a team of teachers and administration in a two year staff development and curriculum development project. Educators retreats were held at Flying Cloud Institute.

In 2010 SMArt staff development and classroom residencies have begun at Conte Community School in Pittsfield and Muddy Brook Elementary School in Great Barrington.
